“Sheep Pasture in Hartsop”

Nestled in the quiet village of Hartsop in England’s Lake District lies this sheep pasture, gently touched by late autumn. The last blooms of heather, tinged in reddish purple, cling to the slopes, while sheep graze at ease upon the fading grass. Dry stone walls, stacked with care, divide the flock and draw the eye into the depth of the land. Afternoon sunlight slants across the pasture, casting light and shadow that stretch like lines of perspective into the distance. It was in the quiet complexity of this grass—bathed in light, marked by shadow—that I found myself spending the most time.

イギリスの湖水地方、ハートソップという静かな村の片隅に、この羊牧場はあります。晩秋のやわらかな空気に包まれ、山の斜面には赤紫のヘザーの花がかすかに残り、羊たちは穏やかに牧草をはんでいます。丁寧に積まれた岩の垣根は群れを分け、見る者の視線を風景の奥へと導いてゆきます。午後の陽光は斜めに差し、羊と牧草に光と影を描き出します。その影もまた遠近の線となって、静かに視線を誘います。この牧草の描写に、私は最も多くの時間を費やしました。
